Few licensed games ever inspired a fan campaign for their return, but Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game did. Ubisoft's 2010 beat-'em-up, based on Bryan Lee O'Malley's comic series, vanished from digital stores in 2014, and fans spent years asking for it back. When it finally returned in 2021 as the Complete Edition, it came with its add-on characters folded in and a physical release on Switch, giving the game a permanent home after years in limbo.
The setup is pure Scott Pilgrim. To date Ramona Flowers, Scott has to defeat her seven evil exes, and you brawl across Toronto to do it, from snowy streets and a movie set to a showdown with vegan-powered bassist Todd Ingram and the final confrontation with Gideon Graves. Scott, Ramona, Kim Pine and Stephen Stills are joined by Knives Chau and Wallace Wells, and each fighter levels up, learns new moves and spends cash on food and items in shops around the city. That light RPG layer, a nod to River City Ransom, gives the brawling a satisfying sense of growth.
Then there's the presentation. Paul Robertson's pixel art is dense with jokes and animation, every enemy and background crammed with personality, and Anamanaguchi's chiptune-punk soundtrack is a cult favorite in its own right. Together they make the game feel like a playable love letter to 8-bit and 16-bit brawlers, which is exactly what O'Malley's comics were celebrating in the first place.
Up to four players can team up locally, and that's how Scott Pilgrim is meant to be played: a couch full of friends throwing trash cans, reviving each other and racing to grab the coins that spill out of every defeated enemy. The Complete Edition also bundles extra modes including Boss Rush, Survival Horror, Dodgeball and Battle Royale, and it launched with online play alongside local co-op. It is one of the great licensed brawlers, and this is the version that finally makes it easy to keep.
