For six years, one of the best-loved licensed brawlers of its era simply could not be bought. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game was pulled from digital stores at the end of 2014, and fans spent years asking for it back. The Complete Edition finally answered in 2021, and on PS4 it gave a game that originally launched as a download-only release something it never had before: a physical edition you can put on the shelf.
Ubisoft Montreal built it as a love letter to River City Ransom and the arcade beat 'em ups of the late '80s and early '90s. You pick Scott, Ramona Flowers, Kim Pine or Stephen Stills and fight across a pixel-art Toronto toward Ramona's seven evil exes: Matthew Patel, movie star Lucas Lee, vegan bassist Todd Ingram, Roxy Richter, the Katayanagi twins and finally Gideon Graves. Beaten enemies drop coins, shops sell food and gear that raise your stats, and each character levels up and learns new moves, so the fighting gets richer the longer you stick with it. Up to four players can brawl side by side on the couch, which is where the game is at its rowdy best.
The presentation is the main event. Paul Robertson's animation is packed with tiny jokes and video-game references, and Anamanaguchi's chiptune-punk soundtrack is the kind of music people keep on their playlists long after the console is off. Bryan Lee O'Malley's comics were steeped in games from page one, with Scott earning coins and levels for his victories, so this adaptation feels less like a tie-in and more like the place the books were always headed.
The Complete Edition folds in the Knives Chau and Wallace Wells add-ons that were released for the original, making Scott's devoted fan and his deadpan roommate playable alongside the core four. It is the most complete way to own Scott's brawl through Toronto, with the jokes, the music and the couch co-op intact, and a fitting reward for everyone who spent those six years hoping it would come back.
