Item Description

In New Himuka, the monsters fall from the sky, and the soldiers who fight them hurl buses with a thought and borrow each other's powers mid-combo. Scarlet Nexus, Bandai Namco's 2021 action RPG, calls its setting “brain punk”: a future in which a psionic hormone discovered in the human brain has granted some people extrasensory abilities and made them humanity's last defense against the Others, grotesque creatures with a hunger for human brains.

You choose between two leads, and the choice matters. Yuito Sumeragi is a new recruit to the Other Suppression Force, chasing the memory of the psionic who saved him as a child, while Kasane Randall is a gifted, guarded soldier whose path keeps crossing his. Their campaigns run in parallel, sharing some events and splitting off into their own, so playing both fills in the full story. Combat is fast and flashy: Yuito pairs his sword with psychokinesis that turns cars, pipes and chunks of the city into projectiles, and Kasane fights with floating knives she steers with her mind.

The real hook is the Struggle Arms System. Your squadmates lend you their powers on demand, so depending on whose story you are playing you might set your blade alight with Hanabi's pyrokinesis, harden your body with Gemma's sclerokinesis, blink across the battlefield with Luka's teleportation or vanish with Kagero's invisibility. Chaining those borrowed abilities into psychokinetic attacks is where fights open up. Between missions, bond episodes at the squad's hideout deepen your relationships and strengthen the powers your friends share with you.

The anime influence runs deep, from Masakazu Yamashiro's character designs to a twisty story that keeps pulling the rug out from under its heroes, and the game received its own anime adaptation the same year it launched. It pairs the speed of a character-action game with the party chemistry of a JRPG, and it offers a combat system and a setting with a look all their own.

About the game

In a far distant future, a psionic hormone was discovered in the human brain, granting people extra-sensory powers and changing the world as we know it. Just as humanity was entering this new era, deranged mutants known as Others began to descend from the sky with a thirst for human brains. Highly resistant to conventional attack methods, extreme measures needed to be taken to battle the overwhelming threat and preserve humanity. Those with acute extra-sensory abilities, known as psionics, were our chance to fight the onslaught from above. To this day, psionics have been scouted for their talents and recruited to the Other Suppression Force (OSF), humanity’s last line of defense. Take on the role of Yuito Sumeragi, a new recruit to the OSF aiming to become an elite psionic like the one who saved him as a child. Armed with a talent in psycho-kinesis, explore the futuristic city of New Himuka and uncover the mysteries of a Brain Punk future caught between technology and psychic abilities in SCARLET NEXUS.
