In Samurai Shodown, a single clean slash can take away a huge chunk of health, which turns every round into a tense standoff of spacing, patience and nerve. Samurai Shodown Anthology gathers that philosophy across seven games on one PSP disc: Samurai Shodown I, II, III, IV, V, V Special and VI, tracing the series from its 1993 Neo Geo debut through its final 2D chapters.
Where other fighting series of the era were built on long combos, SNK's swordfighting saga is about reading your opponent and punishing a mistake. The rage gauge builds as you take damage, making a cornered fighter even more dangerous, and weapon clashes and disarms can leave a character fighting bare-handed. The cast is a big part of the charm: the wandering ronin Haohmaru, the nature-loving Nakoruru and her hawk, the frail, poetic swordsman Ukyo Tachibana, the brash Genjuro, the ninja Galford with his dog Poppy and the French knight Charlotte, all set against beautifully painted Edo-era backdrops.
Having every numbered entry together makes the series' evolution easy to see. The first two games are lean arcade classics, III and IV experiment with mechanics and character variations, V and V Special bring in a new generation of fighters, and VI is a celebration release that gathers a huge roster from across the series and lets you choose among different fighting styles. Versus play is supported, so the duels can come off the arcade ladder and become a test of skill between friends.
Whether you once fed quarters into a Neo Geo cabinet or first met these characters in the later revival, the Anthology is a complete history of SNK's great swordfighting saga, compact enough to carry in a pocket.
