Item Description

Few cartoons were as cinematic as Samurai Jack, with its long silences, wide frames and sudden bursts of swordplay. Samurai Jack: The Shadow of Aku, published by Sega in 2004, brings Genndy Tartakovsky's lone warrior to the GameCube with Phil LaMarr back as Jack and Mako as the shape-shifting master of darkness, Aku, alongside other members of the series' voice cast such as John DiMaggio, Jeff Bennett and Jennifer Hale.

The game is built around Jack's swordsmanship. He has a repertoire of 25 moves and combos, three elemental swords, plus shurikens and a bow for ranged attacks. A Zen meter fills as he fights, and spending it drops the action into slow motion for precise, deliberate strikes, a clear nod to the show's drawn-out duels. The adventure spans four regions, a village, a forest, an underground realm and Aku's own city, as Jack frees prisoners, cuts through Aku's minions and searches for a portal back to his own time with guidance from his ancestors. Mad Jack, the embodiment of Jack's darker side, and the Scotsman are among the bosses, and the road ends in a final showdown with Aku himself.

Reviewers in 2004 were lukewarm on the combat and visuals, though the sound, built on the show's own voices, earned praise. For fans of the series, that is the draw: hearing LaMarr and Mako trade lines again and stepping into Jack's sandals in one of the few console adventures the show ever got. It is a fitting piece for a Cartoon Network shelf from the network's early-2000s heyday.
