New York, 1928. Shinjiro Taiga, a young Imperial Japanese Navy officer and nephew of the series’ earlier hero Ichiro Ogami, arrives in Manhattan expecting to command an elite combat unit, and discovers that the New York Combat Revue spends its days staging Broadway musicals at the Little Lip Theater and its nights fighting demons in steam-powered mechs. Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love is that rare game that is equal parts tactical RPG, romantic comedy and backstage drama, and it commits to all three.
Most of your time is spent living in that world: wandering the city, rehearsing shows, and getting to know a cast that includes Gemini Sunrise, a sunny Texan cowgirl obsessed with samurai, Rikaritta Aries, a pint-sized bounty hunter from Mexico, the sharp-witted lawyer Cheiron Archer, the enigmatic Subaru Kujo and the gentle Diana Caprice. Conversations run on the LIPS system, where replies are timed, and silence or a slow answer can be a choice in itself. What you say and how you say it shapes your bonds with each heroine, their strength on the battlefield and, ultimately, which ending you see.
When the demons strike, the game shifts to ARMS, a turn-based battle system in which each pilot spends a pool of action points to move freely, attack, defend or support allies, and the team’s mechs can transform from ground units into fighter jets to take the fight into the air. Strong relationships pay off directly in combat, so the dating sim and the strategy game constantly feed each other. Kohei Tanaka’s big, brassy music ties it all together with the feel of a stage production.
Sakura Wars has been a major Sega franchise in Japan since the Saturn era, but for years it never left the country. So Long, My Love, the fifth main entry, changed that in 2010 when NIS America published it in English, making it the first mainline Sakura Wars to reach Western players, and it would be another decade before the next one followed. The Wii release is a real piece of localization history and the gateway to one of Japan’s most distinctive game series.
Sakura Wars is a Strategy RPG that features a unique sim-based story system. An in-depth storyline exists, much like in any other RPG; however, the player's destiny in the game is not predetermined. Character interaction plays a major role, and your responses to the various characters in the game can ultimately change the story content and even the final outcome. The battle system is divided into two main parts; ground combat and air combat. Ground combat takes place using two-legged mechanized suits, which transform into jet fighters to take the fight to the sky. Every mech unit in the game can transform from battle mech mode to jet fighter mode during combat. Once transformed, weapons and movement methods will change as well. For example, the hero's ground mode utilizes a sword as his main weapon, but in jet mode he will use long-range missiles.
