Richard E. Grant's gleefully wicked Vex has kidnapped Sackboy's friends from the village of Loom, and he plans to use them to build the Topsy Turver, a machine that will plunge Craftworld into chaos. Only Sackboy can stop him, with a little help from Scarlet, the Knitted Knight who sees a hero in the smallest burlap adventurer around. Developed by Sumo Digital and released as a PS5 launch title in November 2020, Sackboy: A Big Adventure takes the star of LittleBigPlanet and gives him a full 3D platforming journey of his own.

The move away from LittleBigPlanet's layered 2D planes pays off. Levels are packed with bouncy, tactile craft-store worlds of felt, cardboard and yarn, and Sackboy can jump, roll, slap, grab and hover through them with a light, precise touch. Dreamer Orbs hidden throughout each stage are needed to push the story forward, so exploration matters, and Knitted Knight Trials add timed challenge courses for players who want to chase a better time. Costumes earned along the way let you dress Sackboy up in all sorts of ridiculous outfits.

The music levels are the highlight. Stages are choreographed to licensed hits such as "Uptown Funk", with platforms, enemies and obstacles moving in time with the song, and the whole soundtrack, including Lena Raine's original score, is built in layers that react to where you are and what you are doing. It is joyful, inventive design that gives each world its own personality.

Up to four players can team up, and some levels are built specifically for co-op, asking players to coordinate rather than simply play side by side. Critics welcomed it as a charming, polished platformer, and it became one of the PS5's most popular early games. It is a family adventure from the PS5's very first days, and a reminder of how much personality a little knitted hero can carry.
