Most RPGs give you one hero to follow from beginning to end. Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven gives you an empire and a bloodline of emperors stretching across centuries, all united against the Seven Heroes, legendary saviors of the past who have returned as monstrous conquerors. Square Enix's full 3D remake of Akitoshi Kawazu's 1993 Super Famicom classic, it brings one of the most unusual role-playing designs of the 16-bit era to modern platforms.

The story begins with Emperor Leon of Avalon and his son Gerard, but it does not stay with them. When an emperor falls, the crown passes to a chosen successor through Inheritance, carrying forward the techniques and knowledge of those who came before, and the years skip ahead between reigns. Your empire grows as new territories join it, and you choose which of the Seven Heroes to confront and in what order: Wagnas, Noel, Rocbouquet, Kzinssie, Subier, Bokhohn and Dantarg each rule their own corner of the world and leave a different mark on your campaign.

Battles are turn-based, but character growth follows SaGa's own rules. Instead of grinding levels, fighters glimmer with new techniques in the middle of combat, a flash of inspiration that can turn a desperate fight around, while formations and a broad roster of recruitable classes let every generation fight differently. The remake adds full Japanese and English voice acting, both the original and rearranged versions of Kenji Ito's music, and modern conveniences that make the notoriously demanding systems far easier to read.

For decades the original was difficult to play outside Japan, and this remake is the first time the game has been rebuilt from the ground up. It is an ideal entry point into the SaGa series and an amped-up return for veterans, and it offers something few RPGs ever attempt: a story told by an empire, one reign at a time.
