Konami was building rhythm games around plastic guitars and drum kits years before the Western band boom, through its arcade GuitarFreaks and DrumMania series, so Rock Revolution arrived in 2008 with a fascinating pedigree and a near-impossible job. Developed by Zoe Mode and HB Studios, it landed in a holiday season ruled by Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero: World Tour, Konami's bid to win back a slice of a genre its own arcade machines had explored long before.

The Xbox 360 version is built around guitar and drums across 41 songs, with a setlist heavy on hard rock and metal favorites: Quiet Riot's "Cum On Feel the Noize," Lita Ford's "Kiss Me Deadly," and tracks from Foo Fighters, Metallica and Rush. Most are cover versions rather than master recordings, with Linkin Park's "Given Up" and Finger Eleven's "Paralyzer" the notable exceptions. The game's own drum kit used an unusual six-pad layout with a large snare front and center, and Konami built the game to accept Guitar Hero and Rock Band instruments as well, adjusting the drum charts to whichever kit is in use.

Career mode follows a band from recording albums to playing shows, with challenges along the way, but Rock Revolution's most distinctive idea is its Recording Studio, a multi-track sandbox where you can build your own songs layer by layer. Local co-op and battle modes let friends join in, and online versions of both were part of the original package.

Critics were not kind, and the game was quickly overshadowed at retail by its giant rivals, which is exactly what makes it such an interesting artifact now: the forgotten third contender in the 2008 band wars, from the company whose arcade cabinets got there first. For a rhythm-game collector telling the whole story of the plastic-instrument era, Konami's challenger is the piece that completes the picture.
