Item Description

Seven people, one living room, one song. Rock Band 3 is where Harmonix pushed its band simulator as far as it would go, adding keyboards for the first time and bringing the three-part vocal harmonies of The Beatles: Rock Band into the main series, so a full lineup of guitar, bass, drums, keys and three singers could tackle the same track together. When a group nails the harmonies on Queen's “Bohemian Rhapsody,” it is one of the best moments music games ever produced.

The 83-song setlist on the disc spans decades and genres, and the game is built to get everyone playing quickly. The overshell lets players drop in and out mid-session, each choosing their own instrument and difficulty, and the career mode is organized around goals and road challenges rather than a strict linear tour, so a casual party and a serious practice night both fit naturally.

Then there is the part that made Rock Band 3 so ambitious: Pro mode. Pro Drums turns cymbal hits into their own notes, Pro Keys asks you to play the real keyboard part across the full range of the instrument, and Pro Guitar and Pro Bass chart actual fingerings for players using compatible guitar controllers. The game is designed around these instruments and includes lessons for the Pro parts, which made it a bridge between plastic-instrument fun and actually learning music, an ambition few rhythm games have matched.

Released in 2010 at the end of the genre's boom, it was widely praised as the high-water mark of the series, the version that took everything learned from Rock Band 2 and The Beatles: Rock Band and polished it into its fullest form. Paired with a set of Xbox 360 instruments it is still a superb party centerpiece, and the most complete Rock Band experience on the console.
