Complete in box: the disc, the manual and the original case, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. The photos are our own, taken from our stock of this game — look them over for condition, packaging and details. Discs are professionally resurfaced when they need it and tested before listing. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.
Four people, one couch and a single shared Band Meter: that was the pitch, and it changed what a music game could be. Harmonix had already built the first two Guitar Hero games, and with Rock Band it widened the stage to lead guitar, bass, drums and vocals at once, scored as one band and judged by how well the whole group holds a song together. This Wii edition, ported by Pi Studios and released in June 2008, brought that living-room concert to Nintendo's console for the first time.
The design rewards playing as a team. Every player picks their own difficulty from Easy to Expert, so a seasoned drummer and a first-time singer can share the same song without anyone sitting out. Overdrive, earned by nailing the glowing white phrases, can be spent to push the score higher or to bring a bandmate who has failed out of the mix back into the song, and those last-second rescues are where the shouting and laughing happen. Drummers get freestyle fill sections, guitarists tilt the neck skyward to unleash Overdrive, and singers can tap out cowbell and tambourine parts when the vocals drop out. It is all built around guitar, drum and microphone controllers, which is exactly why it still makes such a good party.
The setlist is the other half of the appeal. The disc carries the same 58 core songs as the other versions, the vast majority of them master recordings, and the Wii release adds five more. The range runs from Metallica's “Enter Sandman” and Deep Purple's “Highway Star” to The Who's “Won't Get Fooled Again,” Blue Öyster Cult's “(Don't Fear) The Reaper,” David Bowie's “Suffragette City,” Foo Fighters' “Learn to Fly,” Bon Jovi's “Wanted Dead or Alive” and OK Go's “Here It Goes Again,” so everyone in the room gets a song they want to play.
On Wii the package is leaner than its HD counterparts: there is no downloadable content or online play, and Band World Tour becomes a straightforward climb through tiers of songs instead of an open map of venues. That simplicity makes it a quick game to set up and play, and Harmonix later filled the gap with standalone Track Pack discs. Game Informer scored this version 8.25 out of 10. As the first Rock Band on Nintendo hardware, it is the starting point for the series on Wii and the disc that taught a lot of families to play as a band.
Rock Band is a music video game that allows up to four players to simulate the performance of popular rock music songs by playing with controllers modeled after musical instruments.
