For a generation of fans, Robotech meant one image above all: a Veritech fighter folding in mid-air from jet to robot without missing a beat. Robotech: Battlecry finally put that move in your hands. Developed by Vicious Cycle Software and published by TDK Mediactive in association with Harmony Gold, the 2002 action game wraps the transforming Veritech in a bold cel-shaded look that makes each mission feel like an episode of the show.
The transformation is the whole game. Fighter mode is built for fast aerial dogfighting, Battloid mode puts you on the ground as a full robot, and Guardian mode, the hybrid with legs and wings, splits the difference. Switching instantly between the three in the middle of a fight is where Battlecry comes alive, whether you're strafing Zentraedi battle pods from the air or dropping down to slug it out at close range. More than 40 missions take you across land, sky and space with dozens of Veritech fighters to fly, and split-screen multiplayer lets a friend join the fight.
Rather than retell the series, the game tells a new story alongside it. You fly as Jack Archer, a former mercenary from the Global Civil War who is recommended to the RDF after flying both with and against Roy Fokker. His story takes in his final training and the Battle of Macross Island, then strands him on Earth when the SDF-1 folds away to Pluto. Most of the campaign plays out in the aftermath of the Zentraedi's devastating Rain of Death, with Jack's Wolf Squadron defending human outposts against rogue Zentraedi under the warlord Zeraal. Rick Hunter, Roy Fokker and Lisa Hayes appear along the way, and one mission centers on Lynn Minmei.
Reviews were solid rather than spectacular, but critics singled out how well it re-created the show's fast-paced mech combat, and that is the appeal today: three-mode transformation at your fingertips, a fresh pilot's-eye story woven through the Macross saga, and a cel-shaded style that still looks like the cartoon come to life.
It's a desperate struggle to save the Earth in over 40+ missions with 40 Veritech fighters on land, air and outer space. Take the role of intrepid fighter pilot Jack Archer, who must put his skills to the test in the ultimate battle against the forces of the alien Zentraedi. Sit at the controls of a Veritech fighter, a unique mecha capable of ground-based fighting in robot form. Or have the option to instantaneously change into a fast attack fighter for aerial dog fighting, plus the hybrid Guardian mode that blends some of the strengths and weaknesses of the other two modes. Battlecry's combination of fast-paced gameplay, freedom of movement, and dramatic storyline make for a unique combat experience.
