For a generation of kids who caught Robotech on after-school television, the dream was always the same: climb into a Veritech, punch the throttle and transform in the middle of a dogfight. Robotech: Battlecry made that dream playable on the PlayStation 2, wrapping the show's mecha in bright cel-shaded visuals that keep their original TV color schemes, so the fighters look as if they flew straight off an animation cel.
The heart of the game is the three-way transformation. Fighter mode is built for aerial dogfights, Battloid turns your Veritech into a walking robot for ground combat, and Guardian splits the difference as a hybrid of the two, with the change between them happening instantly and smoothly. Across five chapters and more than 40 missions you will tangle with Zentraedi forces in the air, on the ground and in space, rescue hostages, escort convoys and defend the SDF-1, picking the form that suits each fight. Unlockable multiplayer maps and paint schemes extend the life of the disc, and split-screen play lets two friends take each other on.
You play Jack Archer, a new pilot defending the SDF-1 during the events of The Macross Saga, the first arc of the series, about a decade after the ship crash-landed on Earth. Archer is voiced by Cam Clarke, the voice of Max Sterling on the show, and familiar faces including Rick Hunter, Lisa Hayes, Roy Fokker and Lynn Minmei turn up along the way. Slotting an original pilot in alongside the show's crew gives longtime fans a fresh vantage point on a war they know by heart.
Critics at the time found the missions repetitive, but they agreed on what matters most to a Robotech fan: the transformations look and feel right, and the combat catches some of the show's frantic pace. Developer Vicious Cycle Software followed it up with Robotech: Invasion, yet Battlecry is the one that puts players inside the Macross Saga itself, and it still captures that after-school thrill of watching a jet unfold into a giant robot in the middle of a firefight.
It's a desperate struggle to save the Earth in over 40+ missions with 40 Veritech fighters on land, air and outer space. Take the role of intrepid fighter pilot Jack Archer, who must put his skills to the test in the ultimate battle against the forces of the alien Zentraedi. Sit at the controls of a Veritech fighter, a unique mecha capable of ground-based fighting in robot form. Or have the option to instantaneously change into a fast attack fighter for aerial dog fighting, plus the hybrid Guardian mode that blends some of the strengths and weaknesses of the other two modes. Battlecry's combination of fast-paced gameplay, freedom of movement, and dramatic storyline make for a unique combat experience.
