Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. The photos are our own, taken from our stock of this game — look them over for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.
When a new gang muscles into Tokyo and one of Kunio's friends ends up on the wrong end of it, the hot-blooded high schooler does what he always does: rolls up his sleeves and starts knocking heads across the city. River City: Tokyo Rumble is a direct descendant of River City Ransom, the NES classic that mixed side-scrolling beat 'em up action with shops, stats and a sprawling map, and Arc System Works carries that formula to the 3DS with the Kunio-kun series' chunky, expressive sprite style intact.
Tokyo is carved up into neighborhoods held by rival gangs, each with its own look and attitude, and clearing them out street by street is the backbone of the adventure. Combat is simple to learn and wonderfully messy in practice: punch, kick and jump, then grab whatever is lying around, from soccer balls and chains to iron knuckles and even bicycles, and put it to use on the nearest thug. Beaten enemies cough up cash, and that money is what feeds everything else Kunio does between fights.
The RPG side is where the hours go. Side jobs around the city pay out between story fights, shops line the streets selling ways to boost your stats, recover lost health and learn new techniques, and the local food joints keep you fighting fit. Watching Kunio grow from a scrappy brawler into a one-man wrecking crew, one purchase and one new move at a time, is the same loop that made River City Ransom so hard to put down, and it still works beautifully on a handheld.
Two extra modes stretch it further. A tournament-style brawl mode lets you fight the CPU or friends playing locally, and Dodgeball revives the series' long love affair with the sport, built on the same engine as Super Dodge Ball Advance. Tokyo Rumble first came out in Japan in 2013 and reached North America in 2016 courtesy of Natsume, which makes it the place to go if River City Ransom left you wanting a portable sequel with the same scrappy, comic attitude.
River City: Tokyo Rumble follows the story of a hot-blooded high school student named Kunio and his good friends. When a nefarious gang moves into Tokyo to try to take it over, it's up to this self-proclaimed "fighter for justice" and his buddies to make sure the streets stay safe! Punch, kick, use weapons such as soccer balls, iron knuckles, chains, and even bicycles to knock some sense into those devious gang members. Take on jobs, level up your abilities, and don't forget to stop on occasion for a snack or two at the local food joints. Luckily, smiles are free!
