Kunio and Riki have been kidnapped, and their girlfriends are not waiting around for anyone to rescue them. River City Girls flips the long-running Kunio-kun brawler series on its head by putting Kyoko and Misako in the lead, two sharp-tongued high schoolers who punch, kick and suplex their way across River City to get their boyfriends back. Developed by WayForward and first released in 2019, it reached PS5 in 2022.

Under the attitude sits a surprisingly deep beat 'em up with an RPG backbone that echoes the open-ended structure of River City Ransom. Kyoko and Misako level up, learn new combos, counters, throws and special attacks from shops and dojos, and buy food and gear that boost their stats. Defeated enemies can be recruited as assist partners, side quests pull you into every district of the city, and familiar faces from past River City games turn up along the way. A second player can join on the same couch, which is the way brawlers have always been best.

WayForward's pixel art is bursting with personality, from the bustling streets to the exaggerated knockouts, and the story unfolds in anime-style cutscenes and comic-panel conversations packed with jokes. The bosses are memorable characters in their own right, starting with Misuzu, the towering hall monitor, and Megan McDuffee's soundtrack, which adds vocal songs to several big fights, gives the whole adventure a bright, energetic pulse.

River City Girls was a hit with critics and players and launched a series of its own, followed by River City Girls Zero and River City Girls 2. That makes this the starting point for Kyoko and Misako's story, and a modern brawler that understands exactly why players have loved the Kunio-kun games since the 8-bit days.

River City Girls stars Kyoko and Misako, two street-tough high-schoolers who must fight their way through the six regions of River City to rescue their kidnapped boyfriends, series mainstays Kunio and Riki. Along the way, they'll utilize an arsenal of combos, counters, throws, and special attacks; battle an assortment of enemies; accept numerous side quests; level up with experience points; interact with NPCs (including guest stars from past River City games); and shop for a variety of items, food, and gear to boost stats and unlock new abilities. The girls can even wield weapons and recruit defeated foes to join them in combat!
