Item Description

Ridge Racer Revolution hit Japanese stores on December 3, 1995, exactly one year after the PlayStation itself, and it plays like Namco's anniversary victory lap. The original Ridge Racer had shown what Sony's console could do. Revolution shows what Namco learned in that first year, keeping the drift-happy formula intact while piling on the depth the launch game lacked.

The racing is as pure as ever. You line up against eleven computer-controlled rivals on new Novice, Intermediate and Expert courses, throw the car sideways into each sweeping bend and hold the slide to the apex, with handling that moves closer to the arcade's Ridge Racer 2. Around that core, Namco added a rear-view mirror, a Free Run mode with no traffic and no lap limit, and an unlockable option to choose the time of day for a race. Win the Time Trials and you earn hidden machines including the 13th Racing car and the gleaming White Angel from the cover, and clearing the circuits opens reversed tracks plus a couple of secret modes, among them a Drift Contest.

Even the warm-up is a treat. Before the title screen you play a round of Namco's Galaga '88, taking over from the first game's Galaxian, and a good run unlocks eight extra cars. The game was also designed around the PlayStation Link Cable, connecting two consoles for head-to-head Versus races with a catch-up boost for whoever is trailing, a feature critics singled out at the time. The soundtrack mixes new tracks by Hiroshi Okubo and Nobuhide Isayama with music drawn from Ridge Racer 2.

Famitsu scored it 39 out of 40, though a few Western critics felt it was more refinement than revolution. That is fair, and also the appeal: this is the classic Ridge Racer feel with a full year's worth of polish and secrets. As the original Japanese release, it sits naturally beside the Japanese launch game in an import library, the second chapter in a series that would keep drifting for decades.
