Item Description

For a lot of players in Japan in December 1994, Ridge Racer was the moment the future arrived. Namco's polygon racer had been an arcade sensation on the powerful System 22 board, and here it was on launch day for Sony's brand-new PlayStation, smooth, colorful and fast enough to make every other home racing game suddenly look old.

Even the loading screen was a statement. While the game loads, you play a quick round of Namco's Galaxian, and wiping out every enemy unlocks extra cars for the race itself. Once loading finishes, the entire game sits in the console's memory, so you can pop the disc out and drop in your own music CD, a trick that delighted players and became one of the most famous details of the PlayStation's early days.

The racing is pure arcade drifting. A single seaside circuit expands into novice, intermediate and expert layouts, plus a time trial, and the challenge is learning to throw your car sideways into the long sweeping bends and hold the slide just right. It is focused rather than sprawling, and that focus is the point: every run is about shaving a fraction more off your time, with Namco's pounding electronic soundtrack driving you on.

This is the original Japanese launch release, the game that introduced the PlayStation to its home audience and started a series that would run for decades. For import collectors building a Japanese PlayStation library, it is the natural first disc, a piece of console history that still plays beautifully.
