Item Description

Ridge Racer DS was out on the starting grid within weeks of the Nintendo DS reaching North American stores, a full 3D arcade racer at a moment when most players were still working out what a second screen and a stylus were for. It came from Nintendo Software Technology, the same team that built Ridge Racer 64, and it carries that game's courses, cars and breakneck sense of speed onto the new handheld.

The heart of it is pure Ridge Racer: hit a corner far too fast, kick the tail out and hold a long, smoking powerslide through the bend without lifting off. There are 20 tracks spread across three locations, including the classic seaside Ridge Racer city circuit, a Northwest course drawn from Ridge Racer Revolution and a sun-baked Southwest desert, with more course variations opening up as you progress. New cars unlock as you keep winning, so the garage grows steadily the longer you chase first place.

This was also a game eager to show off its hardware. Alongside the D-pad, you can steer with an on-screen wheel on the touch screen, spinning it with the stylus or a thumb, an early experiment that captures exactly how new and strange the DS felt in its first months. Wireless racing supports up to six players, and the thumping techno soundtrack keeps the arcade energy high.

For a Ridge Racer collection it is a fascinating branch of the family tree: the Nintendo-built side of Namco's series, shrunk down to pocket size with its drift-happy swagger intact, and a snapshot of the DS launch era when every new release was testing what a handheld could do.
