Picture a mountaintop in a park that does not exist: Yosemite's granite walls on one side, the red hoodoos of Bryce Canyon on the other, and a wingsuit waiting for the leap between them. Riders Republic, Ubisoft Annecy's 2021 open-world sports game, stitches together a stylized mash-up of American national parks and hands you bikes, skis, snowboards and wingsuits to explore it however you like. It is the spiritual successor to the studio's Steep, scaled up and pointed squarely at fun.

The disciplines are organized into careers, among them bike racing, bike freestyle, snow racing, snow tricks and air sports, and progress in one opens the door to bigger events across all of them. Downhill mountain-bike runs through giant sequoia forests are pure adrenaline, trick events turn a snowy slope into a playground for flips and grabs, and wingsuit flights thread canyons at absurd speed. A rewind button lets you undo a bad landing and try the line again, and two trick control schemes make it easy to pick up while leaving plenty of depth for score chasers. Then there are the toys, from rocket-powered wingsuits to oddball bikes and outlandish outfits, which lean into the game's playful, slightly ridiculous attitude.

The headline feature was the mass race, a chaotic event that packed dozens of riders onto a single course spanning several sports at once, and the whole map was designed as a shared social space, with Riders Ridge serving as a festival-style hub between events. Grand Teton, Zion, Canyonlands, Sequoia and Mammoth Mountain all feed into the patchwork, so the scenery shifts from desert rock to alpine snow within a single run.

What makes it worth playing is how freely it moves between the serious and the silly. One minute you are carefully carving a slalom line, the next you are launching a bike off a cliff just to see how far it goes. It captures the spirit of the early-2000s extreme-sports games with the scale of a modern open world, and it is at its best when you stop chasing objectives and simply ride.
