Item Description
Picture a putting green where the ball croaks. Ribbit King swaps the golf ball for a frog and the club for an oversized mallet, then asks you to read the wind, judge the terrain and send that poor amphibian sailing toward the hole. The game calls the sport “frolf,” and its Japanese title, Kero Kero King DX, is built on the sound a frog makes, which tells you exactly how seriously the game takes itself.
Underneath the slapstick is a cleverer design than it first appears. Frolf is scored on points rather than strokes alone: point bubbles float across each course, gimmicks like interconnected whirlpools can fling your frog somewhere unexpected, and sinking the hole in few shots still pays off. The frog has a mind of its own, too, bouncing off spider webs and lunging at passing flies mid-flight, so a carefully planned shot can turn into a lucky break or a disaster. Luck plays as big a role as skill, and that is precisely what makes a close round so loud in the room.
Story mode stars Scooter, a young carpenter who has to win a frolf tournament to claim the precious fuel his home planet needs to survive. Beating the oddball rivals along the way unlocks them for multiplayer, and new frogs and power-ups can be picked up from defeated opponents or a gumball machine in the hub. Versus play supports up to four players taking turns at the tee, like a round of mini-golf with friends.
That turn-taking multiplayer is the real payoff. Ribbit King belongs to the PlayStation 2's wonderfully strange B-side, the kind of game publishers took chances on when the console was in every living room, and it plays best with a few friends, a couch and nobody taking the leaderboard too seriously. Very few sports games let you lose a hole because your ball got distracted by a fly.

About the game
The 'Kero Kero' of the title comes from the onomatopoeia for the sound a frog makes. But no wonder the frog is squawking as it gets hammered around the course in a game of croquet with frogs instead of balls. Various conditions to consider too like in golf such as the wind direction or the fact that the ball is a frog and will jump off spiders webs or launch at passing flies. Allows players to enjoy their own characters in versus mode too.
