Golf is a gentle sport. Frolf is not. In Ribbit King, you set a frog on a catapult, bring a giant hammer down on the other end, and send your amphibian sailing across a course full of bumpers, gadgets and hazards, hoping it lands in the hole in as few strokes as possible. Bandai's 2004 North American release of the Japanese Kero Kero King, developed by Infinity and Jamsworks, ranks among the strangest and most cheerful sports games on the GameCube.
The scoring is what makes it more than mini-golf. Points come from sinking the frog in few strokes, but also from everything it touches on the way: point-filled spheres, flies for the frog to swallow in mid-flight, and timed button or control-stick events triggered on the course. A wild, bouncing shot that racks up points can beat a tidy par. Before each match you equip up to five power-ups, different frogs with their own properties can be unlocked, and new items come from defeated opponents or a gumball machine in the central hub.
The story is gloriously odd. Scooter, a young carpenter, enters the Frolf championship to win the Super Ribbinite fuel his home planet needs, coached by Pickwick, a talking picnic basket who doubles as his caddy, while a referee named Sluggy keeps order. Rivals such as Pan-Pan, Sir Waddlelot, Sparky and Whoosh become playable in multiplayer once you beat them, and special bottlecaps earned by completing objectives fill an in-game gallery across five courses of four holes each.
Critics in 2004 were split on it, but the things that puzzled reviewers are exactly what its fans treasure: the bright, toy-like art by Yosuke Kihara, the bizarre cast and the simple joy of whacking frogs at flies with friends on the couch. Ribbit King is the kind of oddball Bandai release that gives a GameCube library real personality.
The 'Kero Kero' of the title comes from the onomatopoeia for the sound a frog makes. But no wonder the frog is squawking as it gets hammered around the course in a game of croquet with frogs instead of balls. Various conditions to consider too like in golf such as the wind direction or the fact that the ball is a frog and will jump off spiders webs or launch at passing flies. Allows players to enjoy their own characters in versus mode too.
