Item Description

A wrestler stands in front of a reporter after the big match, and your only job is to answer every question with a perfectly timed reply and strike a pose for the camera. That is Rhythm Heaven Fever in miniature: a parade of absurd little scenes, each one built around its own song, each one asking you to press a button exactly on the beat. It sounds simple. It is not, and that is precisely why it is so addictive.

The series was created by Nintendo together with Japanese pop producer Tsunku♂, beginning on the Game Boy Advance in Japan and winning over Western players on the DS before landing on the Wii. The controls could hardly be leaner, a tap of the A button or a squeeze of A and B together, so all of the challenge lives in your ears. The games are built so that watching is never quite enough; you learn to hear the count-in, feel where the off-beat falls and trust the rhythm even when the screen is doing something completely ridiculous.

And the screen is always doing something ridiculous. You slice demons as a samurai, rally a badminton shuttlecock between two airplanes, high-five a ring of monkeys circling a clock face and, of course, give that wrestler his interview. Every few stages a Remix mashes the previous games together into one escalating medley that tests if you have really learned each rhythm or have just been memorizing. Medals unlock extra goodies, and a set of two-player games lets a friend keep time alongside you.

Fever is the only home-console entry in the series, released in Europe as Beat the Beat: Rhythm Paradise, and its catchy songs and hand-drawn humor have earned it a devoted cult following. Playing it on a television with friends watching is half the fun, since nothing is funnier than a whole room groaning together at a missed beat. It is a rhythm game about listening rather than reading notes off a highway, and nothing else on the Wii plays quite like it.
