Item Description

Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure is one of the most charming and distinctive RPGs to land on the original PlayStation, and it holds a special place in the hearts of fans who discovered it during the system's golden era. Developed by Nippon Ichi Software, the studio that would later become best known for the Disgaea series, it was first released in Japan in December 1998 and reached North America through Atlus in 2000. It was the first Nippon Ichi game released in North America, and for many players their first taste of the quirky, heartfelt storytelling that would go on to define the studio's identity.

What sets Rhapsody apart from other RPGs of its era is its joyful, musical presentation. True to its subtitle, the story is told through musical numbers, complete with vocals, in place of cinematic cutscenes, giving it a storybook, fairy-tale energy unlike anything else on the PS1, and the songs can be heard in English or Japanese. You follow Cornet, a young girl who can talk to puppets, and her faithful puppet companion Kururu on a quest to rescue Prince Ferdinand, who has been turned to stone and carried off by Marjoly, the self-proclaimed most beautiful witch in the world. The premise is lighthearted and the tone unabashedly sweet, but there is a surprising amount of emotional warmth underneath its colorful surface.

Battles follow a simple tactical RPG format, with the puppets Cornet befriends along the way doing most of the fighting for her, and most regular fights are over in under a minute, saving the real tests for the bosses. That makes the RPG mechanics approachable for younger players and genre newcomers, and the relatively short length makes it a good choice for anyone who wants a self-contained RPG adventure without a hundred-hour commitment. Tenpei Sato's lushly orchestrated background music rounds out a charming, unusual corner of the PS1 library for fans of Japanese RPGs and of Nippon Ichi's later work.

About the game

Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure, released in Japan as The Puppet Princess of Marl Kingdom is a tactical role-playing game for the PlayStation from Atlus USA and Nippon Ichi Software, the creators of Disgaea, and is part of the Marl Kingdom series. Rhapsody, along with its sequels, are considered musical RPGs, meaning in place of FMV cutscenes, there are musical numbers, complete with vocals. The game is also known for its "overwhelming cuteness" and low level of difficulty. Although this may make the game seem geared towards a younger audience, in Japan, the game and series in general has seen much success.
