Item Description

In this version of Shibuya, being born with magic is treated like a crime. Reynatis imagines a Tokyo where wizards are legally forbidden to use their powers and live under constant suspicion, and it tells that story from both sides of the law: Marin, a young wizard who refuses to keep hiding, and Sari, a government officer whose job is policing magic. Their paths run in parallel, then collide, as the city's secrets come to the surface.

The pedigree behind it is a big part of the draw. The scenario comes from Kazushige Nojima, the writer behind much of Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy X and Kingdom Hearts, and the soundtrack is by Yoko Shimomura, whose music has defined Kingdom Hearts for two decades. FuRyu developed the game with Natsume Atari under director Takumi Isobe, and NIS America brought it West in 2024.

Combat is built around a clever risk and reward toggle. In Suppressed Mode, Marin cannot attack but can dodge enemy strikes with a single button, and in Liberated Mode he unleashes his full offensive magic but loses the ability to block. Switching between the two in real time is the heart of every fight, and it mirrors the story's theme of a hero deciding when to hold back and when to cut loose. Between battles you explore Shibuya's crowded streets, the same neighborhood fans of The World Ends with You will instantly recognize.

Critical reception was mixed, with praise for its premise, characters and Shimomura's score alongside complaints about rough edges in its design and performance. That makes Reynatis a cult curiosity rather than a blockbuster: an ambitious urban fantasy from veteran creators, with a story and soundtrack that reward players willing to meet it on its own terms.
