Item Description

Staten Island, August 1951. The Chimera have finally crossed the Atlantic, the East Coast is burning, and the first man running toward the fire is not a soldier. Resistance: Burning Skies casts you as Tom Riley, a New York firefighter whose wife Natalie and daughter Rachel are taken during the invasion, and follows his fight to get them back. It was built from the ground up for the PlayStation Vita by Nihilistic Software, with a story written by William C. Dietz, the author behind the Resistance tie-in novels.

The campaign moves through Staten Island, Bayonne, Ellis Island and Union City as Tom falls in with Ellie Martinez and her Minutemen resistance fighters, and it captures the series' alternate-history mood of 1950s America overrun by alien biotech. Tom brings a firefighter's axe for close-quarters work, and the weapon wheel fills up with Resistance standbys: the Carbine, the Bullseye with its homing tags, the wall-piercing Auger and the Deadeye sniper rifle.

What made it interesting in 2012 was how hard it leaned on the Vita's hardware. Two analog sticks finally gave a handheld shooter proper console-style aiming, and the touchscreen handles many of the weapons' secondary functions, so firing a Bullseye tag or deploying an Auger shield becomes a tap on the target. It also launched with eight-player online modes covering deathmatch, team deathmatch and survival, a big part of its original pitch.

Reviews were mixed, with critics split on the short campaign, but Burning Skies has an unusual place in PlayStation history: it was the last Resistance game released, and the series' second handheld outing after the PSP's Resistance: Retribution. For anyone tracking Insomniac's alien-invasion saga across every platform, or curious how Sony tried to bring a full first-person shooter to its handheld, it is a distinctive chapter with a different kind of hero at its center.
