Item Description

Tom Riley does not begin his war with a rifle. He begins it with a fire axe. Resistance: Burning Skies opens in August 1951 with Riley, a New York firefighter with no military training, answering a call to a burning power station on Staten Island and finding Chimeran soldiers waiting inside. Within minutes the alien invasion that overran Europe has reached the American East Coast, and a man who signed up to pull people out of burning buildings is suddenly fighting to keep his family alive as the city collapses around him.

Nihilistic Software built the game specifically for the PlayStation Vita, and it was the first Resistance shooter designed around a handheld with two analog sticks. The front touchscreen adds a tactical layer to the series' famously inventive weapons: tap an enemy to plant the Bullseye's homing tag, swipe outward to throw up the Auger's energy shield, or slide a finger down the barrel of the new Mule, a double-barreled shotgun and crossbow hybrid, to lock in an explosive bolt. The Carbine and SixEye return too, and Grey Tech cubes tucked through the levels let you upgrade each gun's attributes. Riley's axe never leaves his side, and a well-timed swing stays satisfying even after the bigger guns arrive.

The story was written by William C. Dietz, author of the Resistance novels The Gathering Storm and A Hole in the Sky, and it fills in the stretch between Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2, when the Chimera first crossed the Atlantic. It is a tight campaign of roughly five hours, heavy on burning streets, desperate holdouts and hulking Chimeran hybrids that shrug off small-arms fire, and the game launched with competitive online modes as well.

Critics were split on the finished product, but its place in Vita history is secure: it brought a signature PlayStation shooter franchise to the handheld in a form built for it from the ground up, on a system whose library of true first-person shooters is small. If you follow the Resistance timeline, this is the chapter that shows how the war reached American soil, and Tom Riley's story exists nowhere else.
