Item Description

Albert Wesker is the one telling this story, and that framing says everything about The Umbrella Chronicles: it is the inside account of Umbrella’s rise and fall, narrated by the man who betrayed everyone. Capcom and Cavia’s 2007 Wii shooter revisits the events of Resident Evil Zero, the original mansion incident and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis as on-rails missions, then pushes beyond them into new territory about how the corporation finally collapsed.

Each scenario puts familiar heroes behind the gun. Rebecca Chambers and Billy Coen fight through the Ecliptic Express, Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine retrace the nightmare in the Spencer Mansion, and Jill and Carlos Oliveira run for their lives through Raccoon City as Nemesis closes in. The new Umbrella’s End chapter sends Chris and Jill to Umbrella’s facility in Russia for the final showdown with the company, and bonus scenarios unlock along the way to fill in more gaps, including chapters seen from Wesker’s side.

The game moves you along a set path while you aim with the Wii Remote, gunning down zombies, Hunters and towering bosses, shooting crates and scenery to shake loose ammo and items, and earning upgrades for your weapons. Hidden files tucked into each level reveal Umbrella documents and fill in the lore, so careful aim pays off in story as well as score. A second player can join at any time, and the co-op is a big part of the fun: two crosshairs, one doomed mansion and a lot of shouting.

For longtime fans, the thrill is seeing classic locations and moments re-staged from a new angle, with the conspiracy that the mainline games only hinted at laid out in the open. The Umbrella Chronicles was the first Resident Evil built specifically for the Wii, and it reads like a guided tour of the series’ first era, with the bonus of being a properly good co-op shooter for a night on the couch.
