Item Description

Somewhere in the Mediterranean, a luxury liner called the Queen Zenobia drifts in the dark, and Jill Valentine is about to find out what happened to everyone aboard. Resident Evil Revelations took the series back to its roots on the Nintendo 3DS in 2012: tight corridors, scarce ammunition, locked doors and something wet dragging itself along the deck above you. After Resident Evil 4 and 5 had pushed the franchise toward action, Capcom built this handheld entry around the slow, creeping dread of the early games, and a crippled cruise ship turns out to be the perfect stage for it.

The enemies are the Ooze, pale, melting creatures born from a new strain called the T-Abyss virus, and they lurch and stretch in ways that keep every encounter unpredictable. Jill carries the Genesis, a handheld scanner that sweeps rooms for hidden ammo and items and logs the creatures you study; scan enough of them and you are rewarded with a healing herb. Switching between scanning and shooting creates a satisfying rhythm of caution and panic, and a well-timed dodge can save you from a lunge when a hallway gets too narrow. The Zenobia's cabins, grand halls and flooded lower decks loop back on themselves with shortcuts and locked routes in the best old-school tradition.

The story unfolds like a television season, with episodes that open on a “Previously on” recap and cut between Jill and her partner Parker Luciani on the ship and Chris Redfield and Jessica Sherawat elsewhere. Set between Resident Evil 4 and 5, it fills in the early days of the BSAA and their fight against the terrorist group Veltro, and the bite-sized chapters suit handheld play perfectly. Raid Mode adds a separate, replayable game of score-chasing runs through remixed stages, with character levels, weapon upgrades and unlockable characters, designed for solo or two-player co-op play.

Few games on the system looked this good. The lighting, the detailed character models and the stereoscopic depth of those narrow corridors made Revelations a showpiece for the 3DS, and it landed well enough that Capcom later brought it to home consoles and followed it with a sequel. The 3DS is where it began, and it is still best played the way it was designed: up close, sound up, lights low, with the Zenobia creaking around you.
