What if the people trying to survive Raccoon City were not elite S.T.A.R.S. operatives, just ordinary residents caught on the worst night of their lives? Resident Evil Outbreak was built on that question. Capcom's PS2 experiment traded the lone hero for a cast of eight citizens and became the first Resident Evil designed around online co-op, with up to four players working through a scenario together. Those official servers shut down long ago, but the game was always playable solo with two AI partners, and its design is as fascinating as ever.
Every survivor plays differently. Kevin is a police officer with a steady aim, Mark a hardened security guard, Jim a subway worker who can play dead, George a surgeon who mixes medicine, David a plumber whose toolbox lets him improvise weapons, Alyssa a reporter who picks locks, Yoko a student with extra inventory space and Cindy a waitress who carries herbs. Choosing who goes in, and who comes along, changes how every scenario plays.
The five scenarios move across the city: the first night at J's Bar, the subway tunnels and hidden labs of Below Freezing Point, Raccoon General Hospital in The Hive, the burning Apple Inn in Hellfire and the university finale of Decisions, Decisions. Nothing pauses, not even the inventory screen, and every character carries a virus gauge that keeps climbing whether you are ready or not. That real-time pressure gives Outbreak a tension the mainline games rarely matched, even when you are playing alone.
It looks and sounds like PS2-era Resident Evil at its best, with pre-rendered backgrounds, moody lighting and groans from somewhere just out of sight, and it rewards patience while punishing panic. Capcom followed it with Outbreak File #2, but this is where the experiment began, the road not taken in survival horror and an essential stop for anyone working through the whole Resident Evil series.

About the game
Resident Evil Outbreak is a survival-horror game released exclusively for the PlayStation 2. The gameplay is similar to the previous Resident Evil games and consists mainly of exploring, solving puzzles, finding items and surviving. It was the first Resident Evil game with multiplayer capability, using the PlayStation 2's online network. Up to four players could participate simultaneously in one scenario. Alternately, in single-player mode, the player is accompanied by two AI-controlled characters.
