Item Description

What if you were sent into Raccoon City to make things worse? Operation Raccoon City flips the disaster of Resident Evil 2 and 3 around and puts you in the boots of an Umbrella Security Service squad, deployed during the outbreak to destroy evidence and clean up Umbrella's mess before the world finds out. Developed by Slant Six Games for Capcom and released in 2012, it is a squad-based third-person shooter rather than a survival horror game, and it makes no apologies for the difference.

Your team is a crew of specialists. Lupo leads the squad, Vector handles recon with active cloaking, Beltway is the explosives expert, Spectre the marksman, Bertha the medic and Four Eyes the field scientist with a knack for bio-organic weapons. On the other side, a U.S. Special Ops team is in the city with its own agenda, so firefights often turn three-way as zombies, Umbrella's creatures and human soldiers collide. The infected are dangerous to everyone: a grab means a frantic wiggle of the stick, and a bite infects your character, who will turn on the team if the infection runs its course.

The fun for series fans is in the alternate history. You run into Lickers, Hunters and the relentless Nemesis, William and Sherry Birkin figure into the plot, and the ending hands you a decision over the fate of Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield, the kind of what-if the main series would never risk. A dedicated Heroes mode let players take control of classic faces including Leon, Claire, Jill Valentine, Carlos Oliveira, Ada Wong, HUNK and Nicholai.

Reviews were mixed, and it plays more like a team shooter than anything in the numbered games. Still, it has real curiosity value: a rare look at the Raccoon City outbreak from Umbrella's side of the line, crammed with references to the PlayStation-era classics, and an oddball branch of the timeline that collectors chasing every Resident Evil spin-off will want accounted for.
