When Resident Evil 2 slipped, Capcom gave fans a reason to go back to the Spencer mansion. Resident Evil: Director's Cut was made to bridge the wait for the sequel, and rather than simply re-releasing the original, it reworked the experience into something that could surprise even players who thought they had memorized every hallway.

The headline feature is Arrange mode. The mansion is the same, but camera angles change, items sit in different places and enemies appear where you do not expect them, so all that hard-won knowledge of where the shotgun is or which corridor is safe suddenly counts for less. Arrange mode also brings new costumes for the S.T.A.R.S. team. There is a Beginner mode as well, with more forgiving resources for newcomers, and an Original mode for purists. When it launched in 1997, the 2-disc Director's Cut also gave players their first hands-on taste of Resident Evil 2 through a playable demo, which is a big part of why this release is so fondly remembered.

Underneath, it is the survival horror landmark that started everything. Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine, members of the S.T.A.R.S. Alpha Team, take refuge in a mansion in the Arklay Mountains and discover what Umbrella has been hiding there. Ammunition is scarce, ink ribbons limit how often you can save, and the fixed camera angles over pre-rendered rooms make every turn a gamble. The famous moments are all here: the first zombie turning from its meal, the dogs crashing through the hallway windows, the Hunters, the Tyrant in the lab beneath the estate.

For collectors, the Director's Cut is a distinct and interesting chapter of Resident Evil history: the version that showed Capcom was willing to remix its own masterpiece, and the bridge that led straight into Raccoon City. It is the richest way to play the original game on its original console.

Resident Evil: Director's Cut is an arranged version of the original game produced to compensate for the highly publicized delay of the sequel Resident Evil 2. The game contains a new arranged mode with various changes made to the game. The original release of the Director's Cut advertised an uncut version of the opening cinema in full colour and never-before-seen. Notable aspects of this video include shots of a corpse with bites taken out of the face, close-ups of zombie dogs bleeding when shot, and graphic quick-cuts of Joseph being bitten by these dogs.
