Item Description

The night before the Spencer Mansion, there was a train. Resident Evil Zero rewinds the series to the summer of 1998, when S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team rookie Rebecca Chambers stumbles onto the stalled Ecliptic Express in the Arklay Mountains and finds its passengers already turned. She soon crosses paths with Billy Coen, a former Marine who was on his way to execution, and the uneasy partnership between the medic and the convict becomes the heart of the prequel to the game that started it all.

Zero’s big idea is partner zapping. Rebecca and Billy are on screen together, and with a button press you switch between them or split them up entirely, sending one to work a puzzle while the other explores a different part of the map. Their strengths are different: Billy is tougher and can move heavier objects, while Rebecca can mix herbs and chemicals. The classic item boxes are gone, too. Instead you can drop items anywhere and come back for them later, which turns every trek through the train and the abandoned Umbrella training facility beyond it into a careful exercise in planning.

Everything else is Capcom survival horror at its most lavish: richly detailed pre-rendered rooms, fixed camera angles that frame every corridor like a movie shot, scarce ammunition and a constant sense that the next door might be a mistake. Swarms of leeches and the creatures they form tie into the mystery of Dr. James Marcus, one of Umbrella’s founders, and the story fills in pieces of Umbrella’s early history that fans of the original game and its remake will recognize immediately.

Resident Evil Zero first appeared on the GameCube in 2002, and Capcom later brought it to the Wii under the Resident Evil Archives banner, the label it used for Wii editions of the GameCube-era Resident Evils, playable with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. It pairs naturally with The Umbrella Chronicles, which revisits the same doomed train as a light-gun shooter, and it is the original prequel in its full, slow-burn survival horror form on Wii hardware.
