"Welcome to the family, son." Jack Baker's greeting is the moment Resident Evil 7 tells you this is a different kind of Resident Evil. Ethan Winters comes to a derelict plantation in Dulvey, Louisiana, looking for his wife Mia, missing for three years, and finds himself trapped in a farmhouse with a family that simply refuses to die.

Capcom rebuilt the series from the ground up for this 2017 entry, debuting the RE Engine and switching to a first-person view that puts every creaking floorboard right in your face. The Baker estate plays like the original Spencer Mansion reimagined as a backwoods nightmare: locked doors, keys stamped with animal emblems, safe rooms with item boxes, and cassette tape recorders standing in for the old typewriters as save points. Ammunition is scarce, mixing herbs and chemical fluid keeps you alive, and Jack, Marguerite and Lucas each haunt a different corner of the property with their own brand of terror.

Found videotapes are an inspired touch, letting you play short, self-contained scenes as other unlucky visitors whose experiences reveal secrets Ethan can use. The tension comes less from shooting than from vulnerability: the Bakers stalk the halls while you hide, listen for footsteps and decide whether to run for the next door or wait. Each boss fight is staged as a nightmare of its own, from Jack's ambush in the garage to a chainsaw-against-shears duel and Marguerite's insect-infested Old House. On PlayStation 4, the whole campaign was also designed to be playable in PlayStation VR, an experience many players found almost too intense to finish.

After a run of action-heavy sequels, Resident Evil 7 was hailed as the series' return to true survival horror, and it laid the groundwork for the modern era that followed, including Ethan's story in Resident Evil Village. It is one of the scariest games on the PS4, and the right place to start if you want to see how Resident Evil found its nerve again by stripping everything back to a single house, a handful of bullets and a family you will never forget.
