Item Description
Resident Evil 6 is the biggest, loudest and most divisive game Capcom ever put a Resident Evil number on, and that is exactly what makes it fascinating. Instead of one story it tells four intertwined ones: Leon S. Kennedy and Secret Service agent Helena Harper caught in a bioterror attack at Tall Oaks during the U.S. President's visit, Chris Redfield and Piers Nivans leading a BSAA squad into Eastern Europe and China, Jake Muller, the mercenary son of Albert Wesker, on the run with Sherry Birkin, and finally Ada Wong, whose campaign fills in what the others missed.
Each campaign has its own personality. Leon's chapters lean back toward horror with dark streets, a cathedral and catacombs, Chris's play like a squad-based war shooter, and Jake's are built around a relentless pursuer, the hulking Ustanak. The new C-virus produces the J'avo, enemies that mutate mid-fight depending on where you shoot them, and the combat system is the most acrobatic the series has ever had, letting you slide, roll, fire from your back and chain melee strikes into counters.
The four storylines also collide. At key moments two campaigns cross paths, and those crossover chapters were designed so that four players could share them. Two-player split-screen co-op runs through every campaign, and The Mercenaries returns for anyone who treats Resident Evil as a high-score test. The Anthology itself was a 2012 PlayStation 3 release that paired the Resident Evil 6 disc with download vouchers for five earlier entries, from the original game's Director's Cut through Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition, which at launch made it a way to own a big slice of the series' history in one box.
Critics were split on Resident Evil 6, and many longtime fans felt it strayed too far from horror. Time has been kinder to its combat, which has a devoted following among Mercenaries players, and its sheer scale makes it a remarkable artifact: the moment the franchise went all-in on blockbuster action, just before Resident Evil 7 pulled it back to first-person survival horror.
