Item Description

Six years after Raccoon City, Leon S. Kennedy walks into a rural Spanish village to find the President's kidnapped daughter, and within minutes a mob of pitchfork-wielding villagers and the chainsaw-swinging Dr. Salvador are hunting him through the square. Capcom's 2023 remake rebuilds that unforgettable opening, and the entire 2005 classic around it, in the RE Engine, with a darker tone and a far more grounded sense of dread.

The core is still Resident Evil 4: tense over-the-shoulder shooting, well-placed shots that stagger Ganados into range of a roundhouse kick, and an attaché case to rearrange like a game of Tetris. The remake adds smart new layers on top. Leon's knife can parry incoming blows, chainsaw strikes included, and wears down with use; he can crouch and creep up on enemies for silent kills; and the Merchant ("What're ya buyin'?") now posts side requests that reward exploration with spinel to trade for special goods.

The story keeps its pulpy heart while giving its characters more depth. Ashley Graham feels like a partner rather than a burden, Luis Sera gets a richer role, Ada Wong slips in and out with her own agenda, and the Los Illuminados cult, from the diminutive Ramon Salazar to the towering Osmund Saddler, is more menacing than ever. Jack Krauser's knife duel becomes a fully playable fight instead of a string of button prompts, and set pieces from the village to the castle to the island are reworked rather than copied, so even veterans who know the original by heart will be caught off guard.

The remake drew widespread acclaim for pulling off the hardest trick in the business: honoring a game many fans considered perfect while making it feel new. On PS4 it brings the complete campaign to the console generation where Capcom's Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 remakes also live, making it the natural capstone of that modern remake trilogy on the same shelf.
