Item Description

"S.T.A.R.S." One word, growled by a hulking monster in a trench coat, was enough to turn Resident Evil 3: Nemesis into a different kind of survival horror game. Jill Valentine is trying to escape Raccoon City as it collapses around her, and Umbrella has sent the Nemesis, a relentless bio-weapon programmed to hunt down the surviving S.T.A.R.S. members. It does not stay in one room. It follows you, smashes through doors and turns up when you least expect it, and the dread of that pursuit is what everyone remembers.

Capcom built the game's design around keeping you on the move. Jill can dodge attacks with careful timing and spin 180 degrees in an instant, both new to the series, and she can mix gunpowder types to craft her own ammunition, a system that rewards experimentation. At key moments the game pauses for Live Selection choices, split-second decisions like fighting or fleeing that send the story down different paths. Facing Nemesis is a choice too: stand your ground and survive and you can earn valuable rewards, or run and live to fight another day.

The setting widens beyond the mansion and police station of the earlier games to Raccoon City's streets, burning and overrun. Jill crosses paths with Carlos Oliveira and the Umbrella mercenaries sent into the outbreak, revisits the R.P.D., and pushes on toward the clock tower and beyond. The story straddles the events of Resident Evil 2, beginning before Leon and Claire arrive and ending after, so it neatly fills in the full fall of the city.

Finish the game with a high enough rank on the PlayStation version and you unlock the Mercenaries mini-game, Operation Mad Jackal, a timed run through the city as one of the Umbrella soldiers that has kept players coming back for decades, along with alternate costumes for Jill. As the final numbered Resident Evil on the original PlayStation, Nemesis is the series at its most intense, and the game that gave survival horror its most memorable pursuer.

About the game

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is a survival horror video game and the third instalment in the Resident Evil series. Like its two predecessors, it is a third-person action-adventure game with polygonal characters on pre-rendered backgrounds with cinematic camera angles. Although the game uses the same basic engine and gameplay as the previous games, the gameplay is improved by features such as auto-targeting, a 180-degree spin, and a new dodge move that allows Jill to avoid enemy attacks. The PC and Dreamcast versions include all eight of Jill's possible costumes, as well as the mercenary mini-game Operation Mad Jackal, which allows players to play as one of the three Umbrella soldiers. On the PlayStation version, these special features must be unlocked by beating the game with a high score.
