Two friends can play Remnant II side by side and still come back with different stories to tell. Gunfire Games' 2023 sequel to Remnant: From the Ashes shuffles not just its maps but whole storylines, bosses and dungeons from one campaign to the next, so the world you save is rarely the same one another player saw. Humanity's survivors hold out in Ward 13 while the Root, a corruption spreading between realities, threatens to devour everything, and you head out through ancient portals to stop it.
Those portals lead to some wildly different places. Losomn is a gothic, dream-haunted kingdom split between nobility and fae, Yaesha is an overgrown jungle realm, and N'Erud is a dead, technological world of machines and vast empty halls. Each one can roll different storylines, side dungeons, puzzles and bosses, and hidden secrets are tucked into every corner, which is why players go back again and again. Some of the best discoveries are well off the main path.
Combat blends tight third-person gunplay with the stamina, dodging and boss-learning rhythm of a Soulslike. Your build starts with an archetype, among them the Challenger, the Handler with a loyal canine companion, the Hunter, the Medic and the Gunslinger, with more hidden throughout the worlds, and you can later combine two archetypes for powerful hybrid builds. Weapon mods, mutators, rings, amulets and traits give you countless ways to tune your character, and the bosses are multi-stage spectacles built to test whatever you put together.
It was designed for three-player co-op, with archetypes that complement each other in a group, but it holds up just as well solo, and multiple difficulty levels let you dial the challenge up as you master it. Critics praised its world design and variety as a big step up from the first game, and it is a looter-shooter built for the long haul: the kind of game where your fifth campaign can still surprise you.
