Item Description
Redout is named for what happens to a pilot's vision under extreme negative g-forces, and after a few laps the name stops feeling like a joke. Italian studio 34BigThings built it as an open love letter to F-Zero and Wipeout, and it is among the fastest-feeling anti-gravity racers of its era, with hovercraft screaming along tracks that loop, corkscrew and drop away beneath you.
The controls are the secret. Beyond steering, you control strafing, a sideways slide that keeps your speed, and pitch, so cresting a hill means pulling the nose up to keep the ship off the track, and threading a hairpin means sliding sideways as you turn. It feels strange for a few minutes and then becomes second nature, and the payoff is a racer where nearly every corner can be taken flat out once you master the line. Scraping the walls chips away at your ship, so aggression always carries a cost.
On PS4 the game arrived in 2017 as Redout: Lightspeed Edition, with a substantial career mode whose events go well beyond simple races: time attacks, speed challenges that demand you stay above a target velocity, survival and knockout events, and boss races that link a complex's track layouts together with teleporters. Courses span the Solar System, from the reclaimed ruins of Cairo to the icy oceans of Europa, the scenery blurring past at full throttle.
Critics were largely positive, and it scratched a long-standing itch for players who had been waiting years for a new F-Zero or Wipeout. In a generation thin on those series, Redout filled the gap with real style, and it is the PS4 racer to reach for when pure speed is the whole point.
