Item Description
The sun has gone out over Redfall, Massachusetts. Vampires have blotted out the sky, the sea has been drawn back into towering walls of water, and the little island town is cut off from the rest of the world. The only people still fighting are a handful of survivors armed with stakes, ultraviolet light and a growing list of grudges. Redfall is Arkane Austin's 2023 open-world shooter, playable solo or in four-player co-op, and it carries the studio's fascination with places that tell their own stories.
Four heroes take up the fight, and each plays differently. Layla Ellison is a student whose telekinetic powers let her raise a protective umbrella and call her vampire ex-boyfriend to fight at her side. Jacob Boyer is a former military sharpshooter with a spectral raven that scouts out enemies. Devinder “Dev” Crousley, a cryptid hunter, teleports with a thrown javelin, and combat engineer Remi de la Rosa fights alongside her robot companion, Bribón. Vampires do not go down easily: you wear them down with gunfire, petrify them with UV light and finish the job with a stake, while human cultists and the mercenaries of Bellwether Security make every street a gamble.
The town itself is the star. Arkane, the studio behind Dishonored and, in Austin's case, Prey, builds spaces that reward reading the room, and Redfall is full of abandoned homes, shops and churches, propaganda and handwritten notes that piece together how a biotech company's experiments turned its own leaders into vampire gods. Psychic nests tied to those gods hide across the map, and the gods themselves, including the Hollow Man and Miss Whisper, loom over the story as the hunt's ultimate targets.
Redfall had a rough launch and a mixed-to-negative critical reception, and it became the final game from Arkane Austin before the studio closed in 2024. That history gives it a strange, bittersweet place on the shelf: the last work from the team behind Prey, and a vampire story with a memorable setting and a premise few shooters have attempted. In co-op, coordinating four very different hero kits against a nest full of the undead is where its ambition shows through.
