As a child, Kurenai watched the Black Lizard clan execute her father, then was hanged from a tree with a tetsugen and left for dead. She survived, was taken in by a ninja clan and turned that same wire weapon into her signature. Red Ninja: End of Honor is her revenge story, set amid the chaos of Japan's Sengoku period, and its premise is one of the more striking in any PS2 stealth game: a heroine who fights with the very wire that was meant to kill her.
The tetsugen is the star. Tipped with a kunai blade or a weighted fundo, it can slice or hang enemies from a distance, and a hook lets Kurenai swing across gaps and reach high vantage points. She wears no armor, so open combat is risky, and the game pushes you toward shadows, rooftops and surprise. Wall-running at full speed carries her along certain surfaces, a filled ninjutsu gauge unlocks a bullet-time state for faster kills, and seduction kills let her lure a lone guard close before striking.
Tranji Studios built it in collaboration with filmmaker Shinsuke Sato, and the cinematic ambition shows in its story scenes, Youki Kudoh's performance as Kurenai and Yoko Ishida's theme song, "Foolish Dream." Critics were hard on the execution, and Red Ninja turned out to be the studio's only published game. Even so, Kurenai has turned up on lists of notable video game ninja over the years, and GamesRadar later argued the concept had untapped franchise potential.
That mix of bold ideas and rough edges is exactly what draws players back to it now. Red Ninja is a true PS2 curiosity: a stylish female ninja, a wire weapon the entire game is built around, and a revenge tale that commits completely to its grim tone. If you love digging into the stranger corners of the PS2 library, it rewards a patient, sneaky approach.
As the power of the samurai class fades, Japan turns to the ninja to uphold political power during chaotic times. One such ninja, Kurenai, lives to avenge her father's death and will go to any means necessary to destroy the Black Lizard Clan. Kurenai is a master of the tetsugen, a wire weapon that can cut off an enemy's head or hang them from a tree, depending on the end attachments used and the length and strength of the weapon's wire. Aggressively employing such tactics as wearing disguises, using womanly wiles, and controlling Ninjutsu powers will help you to escape enemies.
