Item Description

Most shooters hand you cover. Red Faction: Armageddon hands you a tool to tear it down, then another to rebuild it in seconds. Volition's 2011 third-person shooter, published by THQ, takes the Geo-Mod destruction tech that made Red Faction: Guerrilla such a thrill and moves the fight underground, where every wall, bridge and support column is something you can collapse onto your enemies.

The story jumps fifty years past Guerrilla to 2175. Darius Mason, grandson of Guerrilla hero Alec Mason, is tricked by a cult into unleashing an ancient alien threat buried beneath the Martian surface, and humanity, already driven into the planet's tunnels and colonies, is suddenly at war with a swarm of creatures. The campaign is tighter and more linear than Guerrilla's open world, built around claustrophobic caverns, colony ruins and set pieces that lean into the series' destructive spectacle.

The weapons are the reason to play. The Magnet Gun fires one anchor into a target and a second somewhere else, then yanks the two together, so you can fling a slab of building into an alien or pull an enemy into a wall. The Singularity Cannon opens a miniature black hole in the middle of a firefight, and the Plasma Beam cuts through structures like butter. The Nano Forge lets Mason repair anything he has destroyed, from staircases to bridges, and powers abilities like the Impact shockwave and a protective Shell. Stomping around in a mech suit adds a different kind of destruction to several sequences.

Armageddon also includes Infestation, a wave-based mode designed around co-op teamwork against escalating alien hordes. As the last full Red Faction game before THQ's collapse, it is the final chapter of a series that treated destruction as a core mechanic rather than decoration, and the push-and-pull of breaking and rebuilding your battlefield still feels unlike anything else on the PlayStation 3.
