Item Description

Most RPG heroes save the world. In Record of Agarest War 2, the hero starts out as the reason it needs saving. Weiss wakes with no memory of who he is and learns from Eva, an enigmatic woman who calls herself an Agent of the Divine, that he has committed deicide. His penance is to become the Vessel for the slain god's power, power that will one day be used to bring that god back. It is a heavy premise for a series better known for its anime romance and fan service, and that collision of grim mythology and playful flirtation is exactly the flavor Agarest players come for.

The hook is the series' generational structure. The story spans three generations, and at the end of each one you decide which heroine will become the mother of the next protagonist, who then takes over the story. Who you court shapes who you play as next, and the relationship events, illustrated CG scenes and cheeky bathhouse mini-games fill in the downtime between battles.

Combat was rebuilt for this sequel, and it is the biggest reason to play. Up to four party members take the field on a grid-based battlefield, a Leader command lets you rotate fresh fighters in, and chaining your whole party's attacks into one long combo is how you produce the enormous damage numbers the series is famous for. Matching the right party member to an enemy's weakness matters, and holding the right stick speeds through the flashier animations so they never drag.

Reviewers called it a marked improvement over earlier Agarest games, praising its combo-driven battles, smoothly animated visual-novel portraits and Japanese voice acting, while warning that the later generations bring difficulty spikes that call for some grinding. From the Idea Factory and Compile Heart family of PS3 RPGs, it is a niche, unapologetically Japanese strategy RPG: dense with systems, long, a little strange, and very rewarding if multigenerational stories and big tactical combos are your idea of a good weekend.

About the game

The central continent, from where the light is believed to have originated from, went silent, while at the same time demons began to spread throughout the world like a plague. Amongst the survivors of the catastrophe, that fateful day became known as the "Day of Light." Sometime after the events of the Day of Light, a young man by the name of Weiss, who had lost all memory of himself, encounters an enigmatic woman named Eva, who introduces herself as an Agent of the Divine. It is from her that Weiss learns that he has committed the grievous sin of deicide, and that in order for him to atone for his crime he is to become the "Vessel" in which the power of the divinity he had slaughtered will be stored. For it will be that power that will be used to resurrect the one whose life he stole. For those who betray the divine will pay for their sins in the space which separates salvation and damnation, as will their progeny...
