Item Description

RealSports Volleyball takes the sport to the beach, and it has that sun-on-the-sand feel from the very first serve. Play is two-on-two, and you control both of your teammates at once, so the action is all about getting the pair into position: serve, let your partner set the ball up, then rise at the net and slam home a spike before the other side can react.

The ball casts a shadow on the sand, and reading it is the core skill, because getting a player under that shadow is how you track where a high ball is going to come down. Matches run to 15 points, and the difficulty settings change how the ball behaves when it comes back over the net, so you can choose between gentler rallies and sharper, harder-to-handle returns. It plays one player against the computer or two head-to-head, which is where the spike battles get heated and every point turns into a scramble along the net.

The presentation is what made it stand out in 1982. Bob Polaro and Jim Huether, with Alan Murphy on the art, built it as an enhanced version of Polaro's unreleased Volleyball, adding smoother animation and more colorful backgrounds, from the sun hanging over the water to a shark cruising just offshore. Arcade Express called it a triumph, and it won The Video Game Update's 1982 Award of Excellence for Best New Sports Game. It is a charming highlight of the RealSports series and a breezy taste of summer on the 2600.
