Item Description

Before the first serve, RealSports Tennis asks you for something few Atari 2600 games ever did: your name. Entering a name for your player was a novel touch on the console, and it sets the tone for a game that wants each match to feel personal, against the computer or a friend sitting beside you.

You play in the blue shirt against a red-shirted opponent and can roam your whole side of the court, from the baseline up to the net. Press the button to serve; after that, the swing happens automatically when the ball reaches your player, so rallies are won with footwork, positioning and anticipation rather than button timing. That keeps the game easy to pick up and surprisingly tense once both players learn to cover the court. Slow and fast settings let you choose the pace, and the two-player mode is where it shines.

Atari released it in 1983 as part of the RealSports line, two years after Activision's Tennis, giving 2600 owners a rival take on the sport. W. Sean Hennessy, who coded the 5200 and Atari computer versions, impressed the company so much with his work on the game that he was allowed to choose his own next project, an unusual reward for a new Atari programmer. It is a breezy, competitive match for two, and a fun companion to Activision's version that shows how two companies approached the same court.
