RealSports Baseball was Atari answering a challenge. With Mattel pitching Intellivision on its more detailed sports games, Atari launched the RealSports line to prove the 2600 could do better than stick-figure athletics, and baseball was the obvious place to start. Next to Atari's earlier Home Run, this is a whole new ballgame: a real diamond, fly balls, fielders who throw to tag out runners, and the rhythm of a proper at-bat as your Atari Aces take the field.
The joystick decides what kind of swing you take, so you can lay down a bunt, chop a grounder or loft a fly ball, and the duel between pitcher and batter carries real tension. In the field you chase down hits and fire throws to the bases to cut down runners, which gives a two-player game the push and pull of a real inning. Four variations change the rules, including a choice of whether batters may swing at any pitch or only at pitches inside the strike zone, and it plays one player against the computer or two head-to-head.
The reaction was warm. Electronic Games wrote that thanks to RealSports Baseball, 2600 owners finally had a baseball game they could love, it shared a 1984 Vista award for best 2600 sports game, and it earned a certificate of merit at the Arkie Awards. It captures the moment console sports games started chasing realism, and it is the natural cornerstone of a RealSports collection.
Join the Atari Aces in the World Series of video baseball--RealSports BASEBALL! It's a hot day in the ballpark--you can see the hot dog and soda pop vendors making their way up and down the bleachers. The crowd roars after each pitch, and filling the stadium is the sound of "STEERIKE! YOU'RE OUT!" Down on the field it's a different story--just you and the pitcher facing each other in an enormous diamond of brown and green. The roar of the spectators fades into the distance as the pitcher winds up. His arm arches back, his leg goes up, and...THUNK! The ball flashes by and hits the catcher's glove at 90 miles an hour. "STEERIKE!" Another windup, another 90 mile an hour fastball, and "STEERIKE TWO!" Gripping the bat tightly, you stare down at the pitcher, see him wind up, and watch as the ball seems to float in slow motion down the field toward you. Everything falls into place as you swing with perfect timing, feel the contact, and see the ball sail over the right fielders outstretched glove and over the wall. HOME RUN!
