"Let's get ready to rumble!" Michael Buffer's famous ring introduction is the whole premise of Midway's boxing game, and it sets the tone perfectly. Ready 2 Rumble Boxing is less a sport than a cartoon prizefight, stocked with oversized personalities like the flamboyant Afro Thunder and the hulking Boris "The Bear" Knokimov, every one of them built to be loud, ridiculous and fun to knock down.
The comparison everyone made in 1999 was Punch-Out!!, and it fits, but the ring here is fully 3D and you pick any fighter you like. The showpiece is the RUMBLE meter: land hard blows or taunt your opponent and the word RUMBLE fills in one letter at a time, until you can power up and unleash a Rumble Flurry that can end a fight in seconds. Faces visibly bruise and swell as a bout wears on, a detail that made every comeback feel earned.
There is more structure than the arcade presentation suggests. A championship mode lets you train a boxer and work up the rankings, while straight arcade bouts are ideal when a friend grabs the second controller. Button-mashing gets a newcomer surprisingly far, but timing, blocking and saving the RUMBLE meter for the right moment separate the champs from the tomato cans.
The game made its biggest splash on the Dreamcast, and critics rated this November 1999 PlayStation port a step below that showcase version, but it brings the same humor and Rumble Flurry finishers to Sony's console along with a boxer of its own, the PlayStation-exclusive Gino Stiletto. It is a snapshot of Midway at the height of its arcade-sports streak, alongside NFL Blitz and NBA Jam, and a great pick when a couch rivalry needs settling with haymakers.
Ready 2 Rumble Boxing is a boxing game for the Dreamcast, PlayStation, and Nintendo 64 and it was released in 1999 by Midway. The success of the Dreamcast version led to it becoming one of the few Sega All Stars titles. Like Nintendo's Punch-Out!! series it features many characters with colorful personalities (i.e. Afro Thunder, Boris "The Bear" Knokimov, etc.); however, unlike the Punch-Out!! series, Ready 2 Rumble Boxing is in 3D, thus allowing for more control over your character in the ring, and also enables the players to choose whichever fighters they want. Throughout the fights in the game, there is a special RUMBLE meter which fills up, one letter at a time, until the word "RUMBLE" is spelled at the bottom of the screen. Letters can be obtained by successfully landing hard blows or taunting the opponent. Once the meter is full, the player can power himself up, enabling access to a special move called "Rumble Flurry", which might as well instantly knock the opposite player out cold. One unique graphic feature of the game is the gradual bruises gained by players as the fight progresses (like hematomas and swellings), present in all fifth-generation versions.
