Item Description

A crazed giant robot has kidnapped your friends, and the only way to rescue them is on a kick scooter. Razor Freestyle Scooter rode the turn-of-the-century Razor craze straight into the Tony Hawk era, and its 2001 Dreamcast version, ported by Titanium Studios and published by Crave Entertainment, was Crave's final release for the console.

You start as Chad or Ami, pick one of five wheel colors, and drop into Scooter Park, a big stage loaded with halfpipes, ramps and rails. Each level hands you a list of six challenges, including two score targets, a high-point combo, a long grind, a time bonus and collecting every wheel on the course, and clearing them opens new areas like the school and the clock tower. Every completed challenge also unlocks a sky fortress stage where you have just one minute to grab the wheels and free a captured rider, and the game's rescued riders include UFC fighter Tito Ortiz.

The trick list mixes skateboard moves like varials, manuals and hand plants with bike-style stunts such as the barhop and the superman, and the animation is smooth and fluid. Chaining tricks fills a meter that rewards you with ten bonus seconds if you can keep from bailing, and repeating the same move steadily drains its point value, so variety pays. The soundtrack features pop-punk and indie bands Ex Number Five, Never Too Late, Sick Shift, Sloppy Meat Eaters and Threefoot, and two players can trade turns in a score-attack versus mode.

Critics found it short and on the easy side, so think of it as a bright, breezy trick game rather than a Tony Hawk rival. As a time capsule of the summer when everyone had a Razor, and as one of the Dreamcast's last licensed oddities, it has real charm.

About the game

Razor Freestyle Scooter is an extreme-sports style action game modeled around small, nimble scooters. In contrast to most games of this type, there is a story. A crazed giant robot has kidnapped your skating buddies. By completing skating challenges at the robot's sky fortress, you must rescue your friends. You skate around 3 large areas and attempt to perform wild tricks, collect scooter wheels and earn bonus time. By completing an objective on all 3 areas, you unlock a sky fortress level in which you can rescue a new skater to control.
