Item Description
The first thing that grabs you in Rayman Origins is the artwork. Every jungle, frozen kitchen and sunken cave in the Glade of Dreams was drawn by hand and animated in Ubisoft Montpellier's UbiArt Framework, so Rayman, Globox and the Teensies stretch, squash and flail like the stars of a feature cartoon. On the PlayStation Vita's bright OLED screen it looks spectacular, and it was a highlight of the handheld's launch lineup in 2012.
The setup is gloriously silly: the heroes snore so loudly in the Snoring Tree that they rouse a cranky old granny in the Land of the Livid Dead, and a plague of Darktoons pours out across the land. What follows is platforming built on rhythm and momentum. You sprint up walls, hover on Rayman's helicopter hair, punch through enemies and chain together swarms of Lums, while the nymphs you rescue teach new tricks such as swimming and shrinking. The treasure-chest chases, frantic dashes after a fleeing chest through levels that crumble behind you, are some of the finest set pieces in 2D platforming, and the mosquito-riding shooter stages break up the pace. Christophe Héral and Billy Martin's score, full of kazoos, gibberish choirs and jaunty percussion, is every bit as playful as the visuals.
This is no lazy port, either. The Vita version hides Relics throughout its levels, and collecting them fills in a mosaic that unlocks behind-the-scenes videos about Rayman's roots. Ghost Mode lets you race a spectral copy of your own best run on cleared stages, and the touchscreen handles quick menu taps and a pinch-to-zoom camera. The one thing that did not make the trip is the console versions' four-player co-op, so this is a solo adventure tuned for focused play.
Origins marked Michel Ancel's return to 2D Rayman after years of Rabbids spin-offs, and its engine and design became the foundation for Rayman Legends. It starts breezy and ends brutal: the late worlds and the secret Land of the Livid Dead will test any platforming veteran. On Vita you get the complete Origins adventure plus the Relics and ghost races, a handheld version with a reason of its own to exist.
