Item Description

Insomniac Games' first three Ratchet & Clank adventures are the reason a whole generation of PlayStation 2 owners judged every shooter by how ridiculous its weapons were. The Ratchet & Clank Trilogy collects the single-player campaigns of Ratchet & Clank, Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal for the Vita, and this physical edition carries an import angle too: the boxed release was sold in Europe and Australia, while North American players could only buy the Vita version as a download.

The 2002 original is where it all starts. Ratchet, a Lombax mechanic stranded on the backwater planet Veldin, teams up with Clank, a small defective robot, to stop Chairman Drek from carving up other worlds to build a new planet for his people, with the vain, cowardly Captain Qwark making things worse. It sets the formula: platforming across colorful planets, collecting bolts, and buying gadgets like the Suck Cannon and the Morph-O-Ray, which turns enemies into chickens.

Going Commando is the sequel that made the series addictive, adding weapons that level up and evolve the more you use them, armor upgrades, arena challenges, hoverbike races and space combat, plus the Sheepinator for good measure. Up Your Arsenal brings in Dr. Nefarious, a robot villain with a grudge against all organic life, his long-suffering butler Lawrence, a starship base for the Q-Force, and Qwark's own retro-style Vid-comic levels. The RYNO, the series' famously over-the-top super weapon, is waiting to be hunted down in all three.

The Vita port by Mass Media was released in 2014, mapping the shoulder functions the handheld lacks to the rear touchpad. Up Your Arsenal's online multiplayer was left out, so this is a package about the campaigns. Reviewers loved having three full console adventures in a portable but also pointed out some technical rough edges. As a set it is a terrific way to watch Insomniac's humor, level design and weapon creativity sharpen game by game.
