Item Description

Ratchet and Clank finally take a vacation, and it lasts about five minutes. Relaxing on the beaches of Pokitaru, the pair meet Luna, a young girl writing a school report on heroes, and when robots snatch her away the trail leads to the Technomites, a tiny ancient race of inventors who resent never getting credit for their technology. Their leader, Otto Destruct, has a scheme involving Ratchet's DNA, an army of clones and the intelligence of every being in the galaxy, and Captain Qwark wanders into the middle of it all exactly as unhelpfully as you would hope.

Size Matters began life on the PSP, created by High Impact Games, a studio formed by developers from series creator Insomniac, and its spring 2008 PlayStation 2 release brought it to the console where Ratchet and Clank were born, with improved graphics and controls. The formula is pure Ratchet: blast through hordes with an arsenal of oddball weapons, upgrade them, and hunt for bolts and secrets across a string of colorful planets. The big new idea is armor. Pieces hidden throughout the levels combine into full suits, each with its own advantage, so building the right set becomes a small collecting game of its own.

The game also has fun playing with scale. Ratchet uses a shrink ray to dive inside Clank's systems and fight off an infection, Clank gets his own arena battles and directs squads of little Gadgebots, and space combat swaps the usual starship for Giant Clank slugging it out among the stars. Skyboard races hand out bolts, gadgets and armor pieces as prizes, giving you a reason to keep racing after the story wraps up.

Reviewers saw it as a smaller-scale Ratchet than the big PS2 trilogy, and that is the right way to approach it: a compact, breezy adventure with the series' humor and gunplay intact. It sits naturally beside Going Commando, Up Your Arsenal and Deadlocked in the duo's PS2 run, and its handheld-born story adds a chapter that many PS2 owners never got to play the first time around.
